Leaders Yearning for Excellence: Beyond the Spear (LYFE) is a development program intended for all student athletes, but specifically caters to the social, intellectual, and academic well-being of Black/African-American male student-athletes that attend FSU. LYFE strives to increase the academic motivation, confidence, and success of Black male student-athletes at FSU, thereby influencing an influx in the graduation rate of each cohort.

LYFE is a unique initiative because it combines student development programming with an academic concentration. LYFE utilizes educational workshops and interactive, competitive events to create community and further build the academic and life skills student-athletes should develop. LYFE operates within five areas (spears) derived from components of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP):

  1. Personal Branding: Identity Development

  2. Cultural Connections: Equity in Excellence

  3. Game Planning: Developmental Appropriateness

  4. Total Growth: Teaching the Whole Student Athlete

  5. Be the G.O.A.T: Student/Educator Relationships
